The Coming Shutdowns and Showdowns: What’s Really at Stake

Today and tomorrow Kerri Miller on Midmorning is featuring commentators discussing the budget crisis and debate underlying the protests in Wisconsin.

One of her speakers today was Robert Reich, who has posted some great commentary about the showdowns (now in Wisconsin and Indiana), and potential shutdowns, of government ahead of us:

  1. This article raises an intriguing point - what is the real cause of financial crisis and even shutdown of many US local governments? The traditional view of excessive government spending sometimes masks the true answer to this question, that is, huge amounts of tax giveaways to the rich. This further leads to the aggravated problem of tax equity. With the rich, especially the super-rich contributing lesser share of their incomes to government revenue, the burden of tax on ordinary working class is actually getting heavier. Is this what we are expected to see?
